As a SomerServe volunteer, I'm on a mailing list that Chris Hosman maintains that provides a variety of opportunities across the city. Sometimes it's a quick event situation that needs some additional hands like the vaccine clinics or a street party, sometimes it may be a longer-term item. Today's newsletter was one of these larger opportunities. I'll post the details here, but please contact Chris directly if this is something you are interested in. Also, if you are interested in other types of SomerServe gigs you can get on the mailing list by asking for that.

Good Morning SomerServe Volunteers,

Please see the below email from Denise Taylor, Director of Communications for the City of Somerville, if you are interested in this opportunity please let me know :

The Sanctuary City Steering Committee is a community-wide group that coordinates efforts to support and inform immigrants living and working in Somerville particularly around current immigration issues (among other activities we've coordinated numerous info sessions, workshops and legal clinics on a range of immigration issues such as Know Your Rights, DACA, and TPS). The SCSC is open to all and our members currently include City and School staff, nonprofit representatives, community advocates, and concerned residents. We are looking fill several volunteer needs:

1. First and foremost, we are looking for someone able to coordinate all other volunteers. This could include:
  • maintaining an online volunteer needs tool such as Lotsa Helping Hands
  • scheduling volunteers to assist with events (food, children's activities, etc.)
  • coordinating with volunteers to carry out other needed tasks that could range widely
  • ideally this volunteer will be able to attend our weekly meetings during business hours but it's not necessary
  • we are also hoping to find someone able to commit to helping consistently and over time
2. We are also looking for a few individuals willing to attend weekly SCSC meetings during business hours and then to assist with various tasks and needs identified by the committee at these meetings. Again, it's ideal if you are free during the day, but it's not required. Needs will range week to week but could include assisting with
  • the creation of info materials (writing, layout, design, printing, etc.)
  • translation of materials (we particularly need languages other than Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole)
  • distribution of materials
  • note taking
  • topic research
  • public event coordination
  • internal event coordination (we bring in experts and advocates to advise committee members on a range of issues)
  • and more
3. Finally, we are looking for a core group of persons who can be our go-to volunteers for a variety of event and direct service needs. Ideally, we'd like to have 20 people on this list (and fluency in a language other than English would be great, but is not required). We'll call on this group to assist with needs such as
  • family support at events, for example, setting up food tables and running children's activities while parents take part in legal clinics or Know Your Rights workshops
  • running errands to assist with immediate and emerging needs for impacted families
  • assisting with event prep, setup, and breakdown
  • and so on
The SCSC is a great group of people making a difference, but we need you. We hope you'll consider joining us or helping out.
