At this week's city council meeting about Public Health and Public Safety, data was presented about the cases in our area that I thought was interesting.

The full meeting agenda and video can be seen here: http://somervillecityma.iqm2.com/Citizens/Detail_Meeting.aspx?ID=3147

Just down the hill from us--and a nice healthy walk--the East Somerville Main Streets folks are going to offer some free community workouts at the East Branch Library lawn at 115 Broadway.

Two are confirmed right now, more to come. Put them on your calendar and meet some neighbors for some fun and fitness.

I hope to see you there! It's a nice way to try out some new kinds of workout styles and meet some local instructors.

When I hear about any other ones, I'll post them here too.

Protect your pets, neighbors! Just a couple of weeks back there was a raccoon in my back yard--it can happen here.

This is a bargain price for rabies vaccination--just $10.

Event Saturday, April 27, 2019 - 10:00am - 12:00pm

Curtatone, the Health & Human Services Department, and Somerville Animal Control are pleased to host the 19th Annual Rabies Clinic in the yard at the DPW Highway Garage on Saturday, April 27, 2019 from 10 a.m. to noon. All Somerville residents are required to license their dogs, and a current rabies vaccine is required to obtain a license.

When you arrive, enter the gate to the right of the main building and follow signs for the Rabies Clinic. The cost of the vaccine is $10 for both dogs and cats. The cost of a dog license is $20 for spayed and neutered dogs with proof and $30 for all other dogs. Please note that cats must be in carriers and dogs must be leashed. Prior vaccination record is required to obtain a three (3) year license, otherwise all vaccinations will be valid for one (1) year.

Hey Hillens--

I've heard about these kinds of efforts, but hadn't seen one around here. I know there are running groups that do this, and it seemed like an interesting idea to combine some fitness and some community. Anyone interested in something like this? The link is broken but I'll try to get more info.

CDC PHIL photo 20882; woman gets flu vaccineI try to get to the city free flu shot clinic each year--but you can also go to the local pharmacies now to get them. Might be covered with your insurance, give them a call. I tried that once and it was very convenient as well.

Somerville free flu shot clinics: https://www.somervillema.gov/news/health-departments-free-flu-vaccines-offered-annual-clinics

The flu shot protects you, of course. But I also implore you to think of the neighbors that we can protect from flu by forming a herd of immunity around them. Seniors, and kids like my nephew who was being treated for leukemia, and other vulnerable folks need us to help keep them from facing the flu.

I just got the notice about the upcoming Health and Wellness group meeting for the city's climate change plan. Our homework included a look at the city's Wellbeing of Somerville report.

I thought others might be interested to see the state of our health and the issues under scrutiny. Here's the link, it's a PDF.

This is actually the sign of fall that usually starts to put me in the mind of the upcoming cold weather--time to get your flu shot! Not only does this protect you from the misery of aches and fever and missed work days, it's a community service to get a shot.

We have neighbors who are getting cancer treatment, and they are counting on you to help us keep the flu away. When my nephew was getting leukemia treatments, I was so worried he'd get an otherwise-preventable infection that would be so hard on him. But--thanks to the neighbors, he was ok and now in remission (and all his vaccinations are back up to speed).

So please--for yourself, for your vulnerable neighbors--get protected.
