The folks from East Somerville Main Streets have offered us a table at Carnaval! We'll do some outreach, maybe some dancing, whatever...

Join us or stop by and say hello!

I have the poster in Portuguese, Hatian Creole, and Spanish too as PDFs. Let me know if you want those versions to post around.

FYI. I knew about this because Jen just happens to be in my bootcamp workout group. But I thought other folks might not know about this change of hands.

Some folks may be aware of the lots on Sewall Street that are just sitting around, unloved, and under-used. The neighbors have decided that there could be some fun uses of this space, and so we're piloting a number of things to change the tune.

To get things rolling, some of the interested folks have started a web site to begin to drive the conversation. See it here: https://www.sewallcommons.org/ You can see a couple of "events" in that tab. I'll also post them here for ease of reading.

Sat, Oct 14: 5:30pm. In addition to thinking and talking about the space, we are trying out some events too. This Saturday (which looks like a lovely night) we're gonna have a drive-in movie. Ok, it's a walk-in movie. It will be a kid-friendly film. Bring your lawn chair or a blanket and let's try it out. Bring snacks. Let's gather and laugh.

Sat, Oct 28: 3-7pm. We're gonna have a Halloween festival. Let's bring food, fun, candy, decorations, costumes, whatever. Give the local kids another chance to wear their gear, meet the neighbors in a safe public space, and talk about what we might want this space to be.

Mary at Old Powder House, Sept 2017From the city website, an upcoming party with a special birthday brew. It's fancier dress than usual, but colonial outfits are also welcomed.

I'm pasting a snip here, see the link for full details.

My housemate and I have been commenting and grousing about the uptick in airplane noise lately. So this tweet from Christine Barber caught my attention:

https://twitter.com/Barber4StateRep/status/907299353139847177

Check out this mtg on airplane noise tonight: Logan Aircraft-Noise Working Group, on Mon, Sept. 11 at the South #Medford Fire Station, 7-9pm

My housemate also remembered this post at the Davis Square Dreamwidth that is relevant: https://davis-square.dreamwidth.org/3628591.html "Millennium Tower Boston and effect on Runway 33L & plane noise". It seems we could be in for a more permanent problem with this noise if we don't start making some of our own noise about it.

Maybe we should discuss this at an upcoming meeting.

I just saw this notice from the Mystic River Water Association. There's a free kayaking event on Saturday Sept. 23. I love to kayak on the Mystic--you would be amazed at how sparse it feels out there, despite being in one of the most densely populated places in the northeast.

But they also want input on the park design. This is right up our neighborhood groups alley--right??

Anyway--details at this link: https://mysticriver.org/calendar/2017/9/23/mystic-river-community-paddle-event

Join us for a community event to share your vision for Somerville's waterfront and get out on the Mystic River. Participants will learn about and give ideas for the Blessing of the Bay Park redesign and rent a canoe or kayak for one hour for FREE! Special thanks to Paddle Boston for making this event happen at their newest location in Somerville.

Blessing of the Bay Boathouse: 32 Shore Drive, Somerville

Saturday, September 23

10:00 am* - 12:00 pm

Registration required.

*Participants must arrive by 10 to participate in a survey and short discussion about the park redesign effort prior to renting a boat.
UPDATE: you can answer the survey now from your desk--you don't have to go over. Please add your thoughts to this so our neighborhood's input is reflected. Also, you can sign up to be notified of future emails on this. We should stay alert on it. https://mysticriver.org/blessingofthebay?blm_aid=27154

I have got a save-the-date notice about an upcoming talk at the Somerville Museum. Patriots, Powder and Pickles looks like a fun talk about the historical treasure we have in the Powder House.

On Sept 1, 1774 the military governor of Massachusetts at the time--General Gage--sent troops from Boston up the Mystic. They walked through our Ten Hills and Winter Hill neighborhoods to get to the gunpowder storage at the Powder House, and seized the powder that was in there. This event was a precursor to the upcoming hostilities, of course, and is known as The Powder Alarm.

If you like local history, the Museum has some really interesting talks. When I find the official announcement with details of the speaker I'll come back and add it to this post.

This week's Resistat newsletter reminded me of the Riverfest that's held in Baxter Park at Assembly each September. Over the 3 days there are various events. Each year I buy a lovely new silk scarf from this woman who has a booth at the event--I hope she's back this year.

Also, some people like to be warned about fireworks because their pets hate them--so here's your warning.

Details from Resistat:
Riverfest, 9/8-9/10
Riverfest in Assembly Row will feature live music, children's activities, a sidewalk sale, salsa dancing, fireworks and more.
When/where: Fri., Sept. 8 to Sun., Sept. 10. See more at the Riverfest page. Fireworks are Saturday night.
