Via the Resistat meeting:

Hey neighbors--this one is important. The City of Somerville wants to meet with the neighborhood to discuss what's going on with the Star Market site.

As many of you will recall, the proposed purchase that was brewing last year has evaporated. And so there is nothing underway from the private purchase side, as far as we know.

The city wants to discuss what some future options might be around the site. I think this is a crucial meeting learn about what tools the city might have at this point. But we want have knowledge and input on whatever the next steps might be.

UPDATE:
via Lauren Drago, from the city:

"The purpose of the meeting is to get a sense for whether the community would prefer us leaving the Star Market be and waiting for another bite from a private developer or whether people would prefer us to take a more active approach. We'll be laying out a few different options and explaining how community process would work for each."

Please turn out, if you can.

CDC PHIL photo 20882; woman gets flu vaccineI try to get to the city free flu shot clinic each year--but you can also go to the local pharmacies now to get them. Might be covered with your insurance, give them a call. I tried that once and it was very convenient as well.

Somerville free flu shot clinics: https://www.somervillema.gov/news/health-departments-free-flu-vaccines-offered-annual-clinics

The flu shot protects you, of course. But I also implore you to think of the neighbors that we can protect from flu by forming a herd of immunity around them. Seniors, and kids like my nephew who was being treated for leukemia, and other vulnerable folks need us to help keep them from facing the flu.

As a SomerServe volunteer, I'm on a mailing list that Chris Hosman maintains that provides a variety of opportunities across the city. Sometimes it's a quick event situation that needs some additional hands like the vaccine clinics or a street party, sometimes it may be a longer-term item. Today's newsletter was one of these larger opportunities. I'll post the details here, but please contact Chris directly if this is something you are interested in. Also, if you are interested in other types of SomerServe gigs you can get on the mailing list by asking for that.

++++++++++++++++++++++++

Good Morning SomerServe Volunteers,

Please see the below email from Denise Taylor, Director of Communications for the City of Somerville, if you are interested in this opportunity please let me know :

The Sanctuary City Steering Committee is a community-wide group that coordinates efforts to support and inform immigrants living and working in Somerville particularly around current immigration issues (among other activities we've coordinated numerous info sessions, workshops and legal clinics on a range of immigration issues such as Know Your Rights, DACA, and TPS). The SCSC is open to all and our members currently include City and School staff, nonprofit representatives, community advocates, and concerned residents. We are looking fill several volunteer needs:

1. First and foremost, we are looking for someone able to coordinate all other volunteers. This could include:
  • maintaining an online volunteer needs tool such as Lotsa Helping Hands
  • scheduling volunteers to assist with events (food, children's activities, etc.)
  • coordinating with volunteers to carry out other needed tasks that could range widely
  • ideally this volunteer will be able to attend our weekly meetings during business hours but it's not necessary
  • we are also hoping to find someone able to commit to helping consistently and over time
2. We are also looking for a few individuals willing to attend weekly SCSC meetings during business hours and then to assist with various tasks and needs identified by the committee at these meetings. Again, it's ideal if you are free during the day, but it's not required. Needs will range week to week but could include assisting with
  • the creation of info materials (writing, layout, design, printing, etc.)
  • translation of materials (we particularly need languages other than Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole)
  • distribution of materials
  • note taking
  • topic research
  • public event coordination
  • internal event coordination (we bring in experts and advocates to advise committee members on a range of issues)
  • and more
3. Finally, we are looking for a core group of persons who can be our go-to volunteers for a variety of event and direct service needs. Ideally, we'd like to have 20 people on this list (and fluency in a language other than English would be great, but is not required). We'll call on this group to assist with needs such as
  • family support at events, for example, setting up food tables and running children's activities while parents take part in legal clinics or Know Your Rights workshops
  • running errands to assist with immediate and emerging needs for impacted families
  • assisting with event prep, setup, and breakdown
  • and so on
The SCSC is a great group of people making a difference, but we need you. We hope you'll consider joining us or helping out.

HeatSmart CoolSmart SomervilleThis energy efficiency program for this nifty space-age heating/cooling devices was extended through Feburary 15 2018. If your heating system is on the downslope, keep this program in mind. I had mine installed yesterday and I think it's amazing. And I can't wait until summer when I don't have to put in that awful window air conditioner again!

HeatSmart/CoolSmart Somerville: https://www.somervillema.gov/departments/programs/somerville-energy-efficiency-now-seen/heatsmart-coolsmart-somerville

Right now there are some serious rebates around, and the 0% interest heat loan program too.

But the most amazing thing is how quiet it is. Compared to my hissy old steam radiators and clanging pipes--wow.

Also, since I have solar and a bit of extra capacity, this will take a lot of the burden off my natural gas furnace and use my spare electrons. This will save me carbon and money.

Please join us for the final Heat Pumps 101 Workshop next Tuesday, February 6 at 9 New Washington Street, Somerville. Doors and refreshments at 6:30 pm, presentation at 7:00 pm. Limited on-site parking is available. Learn about heat pumps, check out a few of your neighbor’s installs, and have your questions answered by City-staff and installers.

Below the jump I'll illustrate my installation with photos. Feel free to ask me questions and I'll tell you what I know. But dammit, Jim, I'm a biologist not a physicist. Some of the heavy technical details you should check with the companies that are part of the program.

Hello neighbors--

I have some terrific news. In fact, it's probably my favorite thing that happened this year. A local non-profit has been selected to get the 5kW array that was a result of our success with Solarize Somerville. It has just been announced today:

"Local non-profit CASPAR, Inc. (Cambridge and Somerville Program for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Rehabilitation) will soon expand its tremendously positive impact on the community. The organization was selected to receive a 5kW solar array donation that, once in place, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions – and lower utility bills. The 5kW array donation from SolarFlair, the City’s installation partner, is the result of resident participants exceeding the goal of the citywide Solarize Somerville initiative to install 400 kW of installed solar capacity. So far, SolarFlair has installed 99 solar arrays, adding 531.34 kW of installed solar capacity to Somerville."

[more details over at the link]

Thanks so much to the volunteers who helped to get the word out during our program, and to those of you who were able to participate in the program to help us reach this goal.

In the spring we'll have a celebration when they get their panels done. I'm delighted that this very worthy cause--in this time of the opioid crisis--can benefit from this green power and help them with their baby laundry and breast pumps!

I hope this will warm your hearts during this chilly winter time, and that you have wonderful holidays, whatever you celebrate.

This is actually the sign of fall that usually starts to put me in the mind of the upcoming cold weather--time to get your flu shot! Not only does this protect you from the misery of aches and fever and missed work days, it's a community service to get a shot.

We have neighbors who are getting cancer treatment, and they are counting on you to help us keep the flu away. When my nephew was getting leukemia treatments, I was so worried he'd get an otherwise-preventable infection that would be so hard on him. But--thanks to the neighbors, he was ok and now in remission (and all his vaccinations are back up to speed).

So please--for yourself, for your vulnerable neighbors--get protected.

Just saw the city announcement of the upcoming Resistats. I have a commitment already for the Ward 4 night, but that's fine since I'm in Ward 5 anyway. I just prefer the Ward 4 info as it's usually more relevant for me. Maybe someone can report back in the comments about ward-specific stuff for any wards we are in.

Copy/Pasted details:

Come one, come all to this fall's ResiStat neighborhood meetings. Twice a year we hold these meetings in each Ward to bring you neighborhood updates, city data, public safety information, and to give you a chance to connect directly with the Mayor, Aldermen, School Committee members, other elected officials, and City staff.

This round we're also going to be doing a deep dive on SomerVision (somervillema.gov/somervision), Somerville's community-written comprehensive plan covering 2010 to 2030. Since we're nearly at the halfway point of the plan, now is a good time to look at what's been accomplished in key areas like affordable housing, job creation, open space, transit, and development; and to look at what's still in the works.
ResiStat meetings run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and we serve pizza and other snacks starting at 6. (Come straight from work and don't worry about being hangry!) Spanish, Portuguese, and Haitian Creole interpretation will be available at all meetings.

Here's the schedule:
Ward 4 (Winter Hill, Ten Hills): Wed., Sept. 27, Healey School, 5 Meacham St.
Ward 1 (East Somerville, Assembly Sq.): Tue., Oct. 3, East Somerville Community School, 50 Cross St.
Ward 2 (S. Union Sq., Perry and Lincoln Park neighborhoods, Beacon St. area): Wed., Oct. 4, Argenziano School, 290 Washington St.
Ward 3 (N. Union Sq., Prospect Hill, Spring Hill, Central Hill): Thurs., Oct. 5, Somerville High School cafeteria, 81 Highland Ave. (Use the Field House doors for an accessible entrance.)
Ward 6 (greater Davis Sq. neighborhood): Tues., Oct. 17, Somerville Community Baptist Church, 31 College Ave.
Ward 5 (Magoun Sq., NE Ball Sq., Cedar & Lowell St. areas, NW Porter Sq.): Wed., Oct. 18, Kennedy School, 5 Cherry St.
Ward 7 (West Somerville, Teele Sq.): Wed., Nov. 1, West Somerville Neighborhood School, 177 Powder House Blvd.

HeatSmart CoolSmart SomervilleAt the Climate Commission meeting last night, we got an update on the heat pumps program that's running now. If you have been thinking about ways to reduce your carbon footprint, you really ought to take a look at these new and high-tech super efficient devices. Or if you know your heating equipment is getting up there in age, you should at least come and learn about these. And they can do heating as well as cooling. In my house, it looks like I'll be able to reduce my natural gas heating a lot and rely on my solar for much of my heating and cooling.

I've been resisting air conditioning over the years for a variety of reasons, but this new style of heating and cooling tech I can have both, with much less environmental impact (and noise). Also right now there are big rebates and low interest loans. It's hard to know how much longer good programs like this will run in our current political environment, you know?

So this event will give you the backstory on the tech. https://www.somervillema.gov/events/2017/10/04/heat-pumps-101

HeatSmart CoolSmart SomervilleIn order to move us towards our city's NetZero energy and emissions goals, a new program has just been launched by the city. HeatSmart/CoolSmart will offer heat pump systems for residents with this incentive program described here: http://www.somervillema.gov/departments/programs/heatsmartcoolsmart-somerville

It's like the Solarize campaign I ran as "coach" last year--but this time it's not as expensive a fix, and it doesn't matter what orientation or condition your roof is in.

There's a coach for this too--Molly--who will kick off the whole thing with an event on Aug 22. You can get a program overview and details there. http://www.somervillema.gov/events/2017/08/22/heatsmartcoolsmart-kick

There are big rebates and loans as part of this. So don't be daunted by the costs at first--have someone come and evaluate your situation and see if it's right for you.
