Save the Date for Our Walking Tour of Winter Hill This Fall!

On Sunday, October 3rd from 11 am - 1 pm, the SHPC will host a FREE walking tour of part of Somerville's Winter Hill Neighborhood!  Led by cultural historian Ed Gordon, the tour will start at the Dunkin Donuts in Magoun Square (504 Broadway) and will wind through the neighborhood before finishing at Winter Hill Brewing Company (328 Broadway).  With both several exterior and interior stops, the tour will explore the architectural history of the storied neighborhood!  For more information, check out the tour flyer here.  Sign ups in advance appreciated, but not required, to bwilson [at] somervillema.gov.

Not sold on the idea of walking?  Check out this piece from WBUR about the terrific benefits of walking for everyone who is able, featuring research undertaken by Shane O’Mara in his recently published book “In Praise of Walking: The New Science of How We Walk and Why It’s Good for Us".   Walking is a great way to get to know and experience our vibrant city, whether by joining our walking tours, participating in our "I Spy Somerville" Challenges, or just exploring on foot for enjoyable exercise!

Lauren Drago from the City of Somerville wanted to alert our group to an upcoming panel about ways to create community vibes in an area with various strategies. Something to think about as we talk about changes that might come to Winter Hill.

Join us or stop by and say hello!

I have the poster in Portuguese, Hatian Creole, and Spanish too as PDFs. Let me know if you want those versions to post around.

Break out those WHNA T-shirts if you got 'em, neighbors!

We have marching orders for the clean up day. I assume WHNA will target the Ward 4 stuff with Jesse Clingan. The map says we'll be focusing on the Mystic to Healey stairs area. But if that's not your Ward feel free to check out the other tasks and locations.

Here's the Facebook page with details and a sign up page: https://www.facebook.com/events/242532196290732/

I have signed up as Winter Hill Neighborhood Association and I'll help with what they need as a captain. But please also RSVP from the facebook link as individuals so they can get a count.

9am at the Boathouse is a breakfast, not required. But please be there before 10am when we really start the work. You'll get gloves, bags, instructions, and more details about what's up for the project.

On the day: please find me to sign a paper waiver by 10am--I'm told that attendance level counts help them to get grants and demonstrate effectiveness.

At noon there will be a barbecue and chances for conversation. Good time to mention the WHNA efforts, and our survey perhaps. I have to leave that early, though, so I can't drive that part.

Weather seems to be cloudy, but remember the sunscreen if you need it. Maybe a hat.

NOTE: due to ridiculous cold weather, this will be rescheduled. Via Ben Ewen-Campen:

CANCELLATION: Due to extreme cold/safety, the Annual New Years Flag Raising (scheduled for Jan 1st, Prospect Hill) has been cancelled - will be rescheduled for March. Stay warm and safe!

++++++++++++++++++++++++

Got the notice for the annual flag raising at Prospect Hill. If the weather's good, it can be a nice walk over on the holiday.

I'm pasting a snip here, see the link for full details.

HeatSmart CoolSmart SomervilleAt the Climate Commission meeting last night, we got an update on the heat pumps program that's running now. If you have been thinking about ways to reduce your carbon footprint, you really ought to take a look at these new and high-tech super efficient devices. Or if you know your heating equipment is getting up there in age, you should at least come and learn about these. And they can do heating as well as cooling. In my house, it looks like I'll be able to reduce my natural gas heating a lot and rely on my solar for much of my heating and cooling.

I've been resisting air conditioning over the years for a variety of reasons, but this new style of heating and cooling tech I can have both, with much less environmental impact (and noise). Also right now there are big rebates and low interest loans. It's hard to know how much longer good programs like this will run in our current political environment, you know?

So this event will give you the backstory on the tech. https://www.somervillema.gov/events/2017/10/04/heat-pumps-101

HeatSmart CoolSmart SomervilleIn order to move us towards our city's NetZero energy and emissions goals, a new program has just been launched by the city. HeatSmart/CoolSmart will offer heat pump systems for residents with this incentive program described here: http://www.somervillema.gov/departments/programs/heatsmartcoolsmart-somerville

It's like the Solarize campaign I ran as "coach" last year--but this time it's not as expensive a fix, and it doesn't matter what orientation or condition your roof is in.

There's a coach for this too--Molly--who will kick off the whole thing with an event on Aug 22. You can get a program overview and details there. http://www.somervillema.gov/events/2017/08/22/heatsmartcoolsmart-kick

There are big rebates and loans as part of this. So don't be daunted by the costs at first--have someone come and evaluate your situation and see if it's right for you.
