Recently there was an uproar when we found out that DCR is going to remove 8 mature oak trees from the park. This was after the widely disputed decision to include a fake turf field, so many residents were vocal about more assault on our green spaces. Pat Jehlen sent out this memo which was posted to the Green and Open Somerville mailing list.

MEMO

Senator Jehlen, Representatives Barber, Connolly and Provost with staff members met with Commissioner Montgomery and Deputy Engineer Raul Silva at the state house on Tuesday, February 25.

About trees, we learned that:
  • The new plan reorients the turf field slightly. It will be larger, to accommodate not only soccer but football.
  • The 5 oak trees will be preserved, but the 3 ash trees previously planned for removal will be removed, along with another three.
  • The trees will be replaced with 12-15 new trees. They will be planted in the fall, after construction.
  • DCR tree staff will meet with Somerville’s Urban Forestry Committee to plan what kind of trees will be placed where.
  • We urged that some trees be placed to shield the playground from car exhaust.
  • There will also be a shade structure, with concrete pad and picnic tables, on the Fellsway West side.
About construction, we learned that:
  • The contract has been awarded.
  • Some activities, including snow fencing and marking, will begin the second week of March.
  • Heavy construction will be from April to June, ending in time to avoid interference with the pool opening.
  • The field should open in August.
  • Construction vehicles will not be allowed to park on Fellsway West.
  • DCR reiterated that the turf field will have a low fence with an unlocked gate to keep dogs off the field.
About communication, we expressed dissatisfaction with the process so far. We learned that:
  • There is not time for a full public meeting before activity begins on the field.
  • DCR will issue a press release next week with their plans, and a link to images on a website.
  • We will continue to ask for an opportunity for people to ask questions
About future developments, we learned that:
  • In the fall, the pool will be enlarged and repaired.
  • DCR will work with the city and DOT to
    • make a gate in the fence where it’s already cut
    • Plan a crosswalk and lights for folks to cross McGrath at Blakeley Ave to Stop & Shop
We will continue to advocate for public meetings, for both information and input.

Hi Friends!

A group of us from Somerville Bicycle Safety, the Somerville Bicycle Committee, and the walking/ transit/ biking community are planning to celebrate the new streetscapes on Beacon Street and Broadway Winter Hill on Sunday November 3rd between 4 and 6 PM. We hope you can either come to the start at Whole Foods on Beacon St, go for a short ride with us along Beacon St and then making our way to Broadway, or party with us and the Second Line Brass Band outside of Winter Hill Brewery/ Broadway. Or do all three! Also, please share this email with your lists. Here are the details:

Beacon St celebration- 4:00 PM Whole Foods Beacon Street: Hooray for the completion of Beacon Street!  We’ll gather at Whole Foods and share reflections on the end of a long project and aspirations for a better, safer more accessible Somerville.

The Ride- 4:30 PM Whole Foods Beacon St: We’ll enjoy a short bike ride from Whole Foods/ to Winter Hill Brewery/ Broadway highlighting new bicycle infrastructure in the City.

Broadway celebration- 5:15- 6:00 PM  Winter Hill Brewery: Dance and or tap your foot to Somerville’s own Second Line Brass Band. After the music, many of us will raise drinks to toast an amazing year and look forward to even more improvements in (gasp) 2020!

Feel free to bring signs stating your support of these progressive projects. In event of rain, information on whether the event will be on or not can be found at http://www.somervillebikes.org/eventsrides.html. Right now the weather looks good. It seems. After the WHNA meeting last night, we spotted paint on Broadway that appears to be about the size of a dedicated bus lane...

For those not familiar with the plans, here's the city's project page: https://www.somervillema.gov/winterhillmotion

Justin and I are working with the city's Historic Preservation team to have a neighborhood walk on May 5 2019. 2pm. Starting at about 425 Broadway on the top of Winter Hill.

If you are new to Jane's Walk, here's more detail: https://janeswalk.org/

We are currently planning to start it at the very top of Winter Hill, and wind our way down to Gilman Square. If you have insights, special stops, great local tidbits, we hope you'll help us out.

DID YOU KNOW: Abigail Adams had coffee on Winter Hill. I have the letter that describes this. I'll share it on the walk.

More details to come, but we wanted to get the word out now to get you thinking about great items for the walk. And put the placeholder on your calendar.

In addition, we hear there will be a showing of the film Citizen Jane: Battle for the City that week. Stay tuned for details, but in case you are curious, this is the film.

Join East Somerville Main Streets on Wednesday, June 20th, to view and contribute to plans for renovating the Kensington Underpass, made by ESMS in collaboration with Representative Michael Connolly, Alderman Matthew McLaughlin, and Head of Neighborways and Tufts faculty member Mark Chase.

The June 20th community meeting will be held at 6:30 pm at the Community Assembly Room, 50 Middlesex Ave., Somerville (behind the Style Cafe).

I know this isn't quite on the Hill, but it's close and might be of interest to some of the neighbors.
