Just spotted a couple of interesting items in the latest Somerville News "Newstalk" gossip post.  http://www.thesomervilletimes.com/archives/87118

With some sadness, we have to report that Rite Aid is slowly being swallowed up by Walgreens here in the city. The one in Winter Hill in particular is a big time favorite. We hope that the pharmacy staff stays. They are certainly the best, always helpful and always a pleasant trip to the store. Best of luck to the pharmacists and all the others working behind the counter. Job well done!
and
We’re still reading the lease on the Winter Hill Yacht Club, which has about two years left. We found something about there is not supposed to be a fence. We’ll get back to you on this. We’re reading it and we think if the city presses hard enough, along with the state delegation, the city can turn this is into a community place for the citizens of Somerville. Someone sent us some documents – about 40 pages or so – about the club, their lease and membership list. We’re going over it and will update next few weeks. But again, we think it’s a shame all that beautiful land and docks, and most especially the clubhouse, is being used by those that don’t even live here in the city. A vast majority – we hear 80%. maybe more – live outside of the city. It’s state own land (belongs to the people) and they pay rent, but are they current? What is the amount they pay to the state? What benefit does Somerville get from it now? We know that some former criminals are members there. Actually we heard someone say the other day, “If you’re indicted, your invited.” Go by and check it out.

I know they are long-time foes of the Yacht Club, but the fact that it is public space is interesting to me.

I was unable to make these meetings, but the slides have been posted from the 2 recent public meetings.

https://mysticriver.org/blessingofthebay/

I liked the neon fish. And some kind of boat motifs. The historical society folks would like to see the history represented somehow. Oh, and a schematic of the possible design for the Draw 7 park was also included.

There is also a survey over there to comment on the designs, with a chance to win some kayaking time! Give your impressions to the folks who are working on this.

Break out those WHNA T-shirts if you got 'em, neighbors!

We have marching orders for the clean up day. I assume WHNA will target the Ward 4 stuff with Jesse Clingan. The map says we'll be focusing on the Mystic to Healey stairs area. But if that's not your Ward feel free to check out the other tasks and locations.

Here's the Facebook page with details and a sign up page: https://www.facebook.com/events/242532196290732/

I have signed up as Winter Hill Neighborhood Association and I'll help with what they need as a captain. But please also RSVP from the facebook link as individuals so they can get a count.

9am at the Boathouse is a breakfast, not required. But please be there before 10am when we really start the work. You'll get gloves, bags, instructions, and more details about what's up for the project.

On the day: please find me to sign a paper waiver by 10am--I'm told that attendance level counts help them to get grants and demonstrate effectiveness.

At noon there will be a barbecue and chances for conversation. Good time to mention the WHNA efforts, and our survey perhaps. I have to leave that early, though, so I can't drive that part.

Weather seems to be cloudy, but remember the sunscreen if you need it. Maybe a hat.

It's not official-official yet, but at a meeting tonight it looks like the city neighborhood clean up event will be April 21. If we can coordinate it with the city's big event this year it will be easier than our small band of folks who had to do an offshoot cleaning session.

They'll provide the gloves, bags, pick up locations, all that stuff for us if we are part of the larger group. And there's food afterwards, we can meet new people and talk up our group.

Save the date on your calendar. Pull out those high-visibility WHNA t-shirts.

Draw 7 Park areaI had heard there would be upcoming discussions about the Draw 7 park area, and I just got this notice by email. Draw 7 park is the area along the river, past the part we know of as Baxter Park at Assembly, and runs along the river and abuts the Amelia Earhart Dam. Kind of behind the T station and the parking garages towards Everett.

Anyway--it's a little far from Winter Hill proper, perhaps, but is good green space opportunity and convenient from the boathouse area. I do want to know what's going on over there and I use Baxter a lot now. If this was cleaned up it could be nice.

Draw 7 Park Public Meeting 2/5 (DCR Meeting)
The MA Department of Conservation of Recreation (DCR) is holding a public meeting on Mon., Feb. 5, to present design options and receive feedback for proposed renovations to Draw Seven Park, located in Assembly Square behind the Orange Line rail bridge.

Members of the public are also invited to submit comments after the public meeting (by close of business on Mon., Feb. 26, 2018) by visiting www.mass.gov/forms/dcr-public-comments or by writing to the DCR’s Office of Public Outreach, 251 Causeway Street, 6th Floor, Boston, MA 02114.

The meeting presentation will be available after Feb. 5 at www.mass.gov/service-details/materials-from-past-meetings. If you have questions or concerns or would like to be added to an email list to receive DCR general or project-specific announcements, email Mass.Parks@state.ma.us or call 617-626-4973.

When/Where: Monday, February 5, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., East Somerville Community School, 50 Cross St.

The I did the tree planting with the folks from the city, the Mystic River Watershed Assn, GroundworkSomerville, a bunch of neighbors (and some from other towns). People were asking me what it was like so I'll report back here.

We started at 9am. The holes in the sidewalk had already been opened on the Bailey Road sidewalks. We got a short intro to tree planting (shallower is really better for these urban trees roots). Not too much mulch up to the base (the arborists joke about this being the "mulch volcano" and say it's bad for the tree).

We had about 3 people per team (but as the rest of the day went on that blurred out a bit. We ran out of soil at on spot and moved to another to start something else, waiting for the wires for the stakes, stuff like that. But most of it was very accessible to any activity level. Having someone with a little more strength to move the soil bags or the wheelbarrow full of mulch was handy but not really bad either.

We did 10 trees, 5 were Serviceberry and 5 were hedge maple. The trees were light enough that I can pick them up myself.

We had flyers for the abutters to explain the trees and care, most neighbors were super pleased, of course. One guy not so much. Key point: when the city has contractors plant the trees, they come with a maintenance deal to water for a couple of years. These trees need neighbors to help out. So goodwill and adoption of the idea is important in this project. I should also mention that there was outreach to the homes prior to the planting too, so they knew it was coming presumably.

This was kind of a pilot to see how this goes. The grant that this ran under has budget for 100 trees so they will be looking to do more probably in the spring. This might be a nice project/event for our group. I'd like to run the idea past Vanessa (our city arborist) so maybe we can do a Winter Hill focused one then. I'll bring it up at a meeting later, but wanted plant the idea (see what I did there??) now. Most people I've casually talked to seemed open to the idea.

Below the fold I'm going to add the info and video they gave us so I can refer back to it later when I propose it as a WHNA thing. Open that section for the details.

I just got this from the Mystic River Watershed Association. It came by email so I don't have a link on their site for it.

Join us on Saturday, November 4, 2017 on Bailey Road in Somerville, MA, for a volunteer tree planting event hosted by the Mystic River Watershed Association and the city of Somerville. The event starts at 9:00 am and runs until approximately 12:30 pm, followed by a pizza lunch. All supplies are provided. Event is limited to 20 volunteers.

We will plant 10 bare-root trees, a planting method that allows volunteers easily to plant trees without machinery and with a high degree of success.

This event is part of larger project to plant 100 new trees in Somerville over the next year and a half. It is funded by a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), with matching support from the city of Somerville. Other project partners include East Somerville Main Streets, Somerville Climate Action, and Partners Healthcare. See www.MysticRiver.org for more information. More information on the NFWF Five Star Grant recipients can be found here: http://www.nfwf.org/fivestar/Documents/2017grantslate.pdf. [edit by Mary: hey, that's a Clingan at NFWF--any relation, Jesse?]

Please fill out this registration form for each person attending the event. Details about the exact meeting place will be sent out to volunteers before the event.

*Participants must be 15 years of age or older. Youth 15-17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

All fields are for internal use only. We will not share your information.

I have good news and bad news.

Good news: Construction is underway. Appropriate bids for the next phase came in. MBTA is working on a December 2021 deadline for operation. It sounds like there may actually be the Green Line in the future.

Bad news: The community path is low on their priority list. In this election year, there were a whole bunch of the local pols in the room. And they all heard this and they were all aerated right away. I'll cover a bit more in the longer section, but just so you'll know there was already noise about this and our representatives were engaged.

If you want to sign up for their notices of future meetings on this, go to this site: http://greenlineextension.eot.state.ma.us/ And click the "sign up for email updates".

One piece that has potential to affect us (as WHNA) specifically: they are planning to form "GLX community working groups" around the construction part (they specifically said not design, design is over). And these would be station-specific groups so that the group is in tune with issues in that area. So we should have representation there and someone from our group would be well suited if this is something you are into (I'm looking at you, planning nerds).

I'll go into a bit more detail below the cut. I'll include the crappy photos I took and they'll take up a lot of space so I don't want to irritate people reading on mobile devices. Click "More" if you care about the gory details.

Mayor Joe Curtatone meets with Winter Hill neighbors on park issueA number of Winter Hillens gathered near the open lots adjacent to the Star Market to talk with the Mayor about possible ways to add more park/greenspace to our neighborhood. It was a productive meeting and we were offered the city's support for taking the ideas further.

We gathered near the Sewall St open lots to discuss some ideas and ways to proceed. But these conversations will continue, and we want to hear your ideas too. Our next WHNA "social" meeting will be held there--come by and have a look and think about the potential for the space and what would work for the neighborhood.

Next WHNA: the parking lot at 24 Sewall St, on October 4 at 7pm

(in case of rain we'll go to Winter Hill Brewing again)
